Welcome to Shumbas Hockey Club

Shumbas Hockey Club is a Randburg based hockey club established in 2014. Our teams participate in various hockey competitions and opportunities provided by both the Southern Gauteng Hockey Association and other hockey participation providers. We have 2 sections:

Juniors (U5 - U16)
Seniors (U16 - Adults)

SHC provides outdoor, indoor and Hockey 5's services throughout the year.

Shumbas strives to be the best that hockey has to offer. Our aspirational values are clear and simple.

Development

Our junior hockey section represents the origins of Shumbas. Our aim is to create the best development opportunities, with an ample dose of fun for every member, regardless of age and hockey abilities. Our senior players, either on the field or on the side as a coach, look out for our little, growing ones, while the little ones and their parents play their part too.

Sportsmanship

Talent gets you there, but character keeps you there. While we fight for every ball and give our best on the field, we play by the rules, respect our opponents and officials, and we are gracious when we win AND lose. After each game or during our junior tournaments, we get together and normally have a good laugh at ourselves.

Commitment

The success of Shumbas is dependent on a volunteer spirit. Committed members see the season through, committed to their team-mates or age group, whether they are committee members, a parent volunteer, a player or an umpire. If any player or parent doesn’t like what they see, we expect them to help solve the problem. We pay our subs on time so that the club can pay coaches, umpires and service providers on time.

Our Values

Club Management

While we obviously need hockey players to make up a team, there are a number of very important volunteer roles across the club we need to highlight. Key portfolios include Chairman, Treasurer, Juniors Head, and Senior Club Captains. The club is run by a small committee, that fortunately only meet on a few occasions. We are always on the look-out for volunteers, to join the committee or to work on a sub-committee, to help grow and develop the club.

Coaching

Whether it’s the quality of our coaches or our players learning to be coachable, coaching is pivotal to the success of our hockey at Shumbas. While it may look slightly different in each section, we invest significantly in our coaches.

Umpires

It’s not just about our players and our coaches, it’s also about our umpires.

In 2019 we established an umpiring school at Shumbas. Student umpires are supported to write the necessary qualifying exam and those that pass are given the opportunity to umpire at a level that both they and our umpire coach are comfortable with. Players, parents and supporters have the opportunity to learn how to umpire and to progress to any level that they would like to.
